Goals for 2023

I never really make “resolutions” but I do always think it’s good to have goals for the year. Melanie asked me what my goals were on New Year’s Eve and I had to pause because I hadn’t put much thought into it. But it’s good to have them! So here are a few for the year: Fitness I always like setting some Time & Distance goals in Garmin In addition to those goals, I also plan to get back to some general strength training. I’d like to do an hour per week which seems very reasonable. I used to go …

Ironman 70.3 Steelhead Race Report

This year was a year of doing some completely new 70.3 races than I have in the past. I still need to do a race report for Texas 70.3 but since Steelhead is fresh on my mind, I’ll start here! This race takes place in Benton Harbor, MI and the swim is in Lake Michigan. I picked this one due to a great convergence of schedule and course. I love lake swims, the bike is gently rolling and the location made me hope that the weather on the run would be pleasant. Well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad I …

Disney’s Tower of Terror Ten-Miler Race Report

So this past weekend was the Disney Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Ten-Miler. It was actually a whole weekend of fun when you combine it with the Orlando outlet malls before the race and then the next day we went to Epcot for the Food & Wine festival. I need to get better at taking pictures while I’m at these things but we have one or two. On to the race report though! I’ll start after we went shopping since I assume that no one wants to read about me buying shoes, shirts and shorts. (I guess I gave you …

World’s Worst Marathon Training Plan

So I never really talked about my marathon training ‘plan’ for lack of a better word.  Training disaster?  I’m probably really, really lucky I didn’t injure myself.  Several times I suspected I was close to getting shin splints.  I signed up for Disney almost a year in advance and decided that last year would be a year of almost no races in order to focus on building my base and slowly building my mileage up so that, by October, I’d be in the best running shape of my life.  Wow, how that completely fell apart.  Instead I had the worst …

Shamrock 5K

Well, after my last 5K a couple weeks ago I decided I wanted to another one quickly.  I’ve probably over trained the past couple weeks since then and this past week I took it much easier after grinding out around 30 miles of running in an 8 or 9 day span.  I had a great 6 mile run with a friend last Sunday but ever since my legs have been feeling it.  I did a 2 miler on Tuesday and my right shin really hurt.  Damn those shin splints.  So in the interest of not aggravating that I only did …
