Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga Race Report

Last weekend was the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga and also my third race at the distance.  Up until this race I would have suggested anyone looking for a great half iron distance race to consider Augusta.  After racing Chattanooga I’d have to defer to this one!  (Not that Augusta doesn’t remain an awesome race)  The town itself is perfect for the race.  There are a ton of good hotel options that are walkable to the Ironman village and transition.  There are also a lot of restaurants in the downtown area that make dining easy in the days leading up to …

Weekend in the Canyons

A little change from the normal Swim, Bike, Run this past weekend. I don’t get a chance to do this often but I was up in Utah this past weekend skiing at the Canyon’s Resort. I normally get 1 or 2 ski trips in a season and this was my first one. I generally go with some of my work friends and this one was no different. Just a short weekend getaway. Unfortunately Melanie couldn’t make this one but she’ll be with be with me when I go back soon. It was pretty typical for our normal weekend trips: arrive …

Dangers of Sales (and Friends)

Everyone loves a good deal. I’m also easily influenced by my training partners to sign up for races. Combine these two things together and…well, you end up with two marathons in a 2 month period. Previously my two closest marathons date-wise were 11 months apart. That’s basically two different race seasons! I don’t really like doing marathons too close together because they’re pretty hard on the body and I haven’t come out of any of my last 3 marathons without some sort of issue: Disney 2013 – got rather sick next day Space Coast 2013 – IT Band issue (sidelined …

Crank Sports – e-Fuel

During my Ironman training, I spent a lot of time on nutrition. In the summer heat, I was losing fluid rapidly and it became important to have some sort of endurance fuel. Standard Gatorade just didn’t cut it anymore! In fact, even when I switched to Gatorade Endurance, I was suffering massive cramps after 3 1/2 hours on the bike. I actually got fairly desperate to figure out a fix and through my research into my problems, I decided I probably was fighting the wrong thing. I had been very focused on my electrolyte loss but in reality I was …

Miami Marathon 2015 Race Report

If there’s one thing I enjoy more than races, its traveling somewhere for a race. Supporting a local race is important and there are a few that I really enjoy but when you travel for a race there’s a whole new layer of you add on top of the event. The downsides are you have to spend more money and your hotel may not be as comfortable as home. You also have to pay close attention to your packing list or you could forget something important. The upsides are you get to go somewhere for a mini-vacation, try new restaurants, …
